Fforrenry

The Presentmente of the Jurye for the fforenrye of the Commotte of Kydwelly made the [ ] daye of anno Regni jacobi nunc Regis Anglie etc., septimo et Scotie quadragesimo secundo to certaine Artickles geven them in chardge by Gerrard Bromley, Esquior, generall Survayor of his Majesties Dutchy of Lancaster for the South parts.

Imprimis the sayd Jurors doe saye that every tenaunte within the sayd fforenry standeth seised of theire severall tenements in free Soccage to theare beste knowledge. And paye thearfore yearely to his Majestie a certayne yearely rente in money the particular some due uppon everye tenemente and number of acres to suche notes and particulars as are taken by the says Surveyor.

To the Seconde they saye that they cannot certaynely expresse what Demeane Landes his majestie hath or had hearetofore belonginge to his honnor and Castell of Kydwelly or what quantitye and yearely valwe or in whose occupation the same nowe are, for that the moste parte thereof lyeth out of the lybertye of the sayd fforrenry, savinge that they presente one tenemente within the sayd fforrenry att a place called the Pinget, late in the tenure of John Ungoed, contayninge sixe acres of lands or theare abowts but whether the same was parcell of his Highness Dutchye Lands they knowe not, but by reporte it seemeth that the same was parte of the lands late of Rees ap Thomas, Knight, attaynted, nowe in the tenure of Ffrauncis Maunsell, Esquire, by what Estate they knowe not. Alsoe the sayd Jurors doe presente that there is one other parcell of land comonly called Lords Land contayninge thirtye acres or theare abowte of Englyshe measure being within the parishe of St. Issmaells, nowe in the tenure of Willyam Morgan, gent., of Greene Castle by lease from his Majestie, and payeth yearely of rente to his Majestie fowre pounds and twelfe pence. And the firste aforenamed tenemente and sixe acres of lands per annum iiis. iiid. And further they doe presente.

To the Third, the saud Jurors have nothinge mateeryall to presente.

To the Fourth, they saye that they have expressed in a scedule heareunto annexed the names of all the tenauntes that be ffreehoulders within the sayd fforrenry but as concerninge what lands they houlde, what rents, services, they paye or oughte to paye for the same, they referre as before in the firste Artickle.

To the Fifte, the sayd Jurors doe saye that it doth belonge only to the Copyehoulders of Saynte Ismaells to expresse theire tenure, theire severall rents, services and customes and libertye of comons and wastes that doe belonge to theire severall coppies.

To the Sixte, the sayed Jurors doe presente that every ffreehoulder of lands, beinge seised in ffee within the sayd fforrenry and thereuppon resident, is and hath byne accustomed to paye poste mortem for all his lands that he was seysed within the Lordshippe of Kydwellye and alyenation of his lands wholy without condition of redemptione, optimum animal nomine Heriote, viz., the beste beaste for and in the name of an Heriote unto his Majestie, and that all suche Heriots as happen to falle are collected yearely by Wyllym Morgan, gent., his Assigne or Assignes, And allsoe weare gathered by Anthony Morgan for the moste parte this xx yeares, the valwe or certayne some thereof they doe not knowe.

To the Seaventh, the Jurors doe presente that the ffarmers or tenaunts by his Majesties Letters Pattents doe demyse unto under tenaunts, some parte of the lands to them graunted by his majesties sayd Letters pattents for tearme of yeares, but what ffynes and rents they receave for the same, they doe not knowe.

To the Eighte Artickle, they presente and saye that within the sayd fforrenry, there is a fforreste of his Majestie called the Wenalthe, and that the same contayneth twentye Englyshe acres or theareabowts, whereof one acre or theare abowts was cute downe and made unto Charke Coles aboute twentye yeares laste paste, beinge aboute the valwe of twentye shillings by the meanes of Sir George Carwe, knight, as it is reported. Allsoe they doe presente that within this twelfe monthe laste paste, one Morris David Harry and David John Willim of the parishe of Kydwelly, have cutt downe certaine trees of the sayd fforreste by the means of Willime Morgan, gent., farmer thereof, and it is reported that the sayd trees weare toward the buyldinge of a newe howse uppon his Majesties soyle called the Lords Lands within the parishe of Sainte Ismells, and the same fforreste is depastured by the cattelle of Morris Bowen, Esquior, or his Assignes by what estate the Jurors cannot declare. Alsoe the sayd Jurors saye that theare is another parcell of woodland within the sayd fforrenry called Coyed yr Argloydd of his Majestie contayninge by estymacion ten acres or theare abowts in parte whereof certen groves, underwoods and ould stocks have bine rooted up aboute ffortye and two yeares laste paste by Willim John Meredd nowe deceased, David John Edmonds and Owen dd Griffith yet lyvinge beinge then all undertenaunts unto Harry Vaughan, gent., which persons have converted aboute the quantety of sixe acres thereof into arrable land and worth by the yeare twoe shillings or theare abowts. All which parcells of wood and pasture are nowe in the tenure of the foresayd Willim Morgan, gent, by lease from his Majestie as it is reported, at the yearely Rente of [ ]. Allsoe they presente that within the sayd fforrenry within the parishe of St. Ismells there is a certaine tenemente of lands contayninge viii acres or theare abowts, called by the name of Sythen Chappell Sainte Leonard with a ffyshinge weare called The Abbotts weare to the sayd Tenement belonginge scytuate uppon the ryver of Towy which did belonge sometymes to the Abbey of Whitland, nowe in the tenure of David ap Jeuan ap Gwilliam as undertenaunte to John Reade, gent, whoe houldeth the same by lease hearetofore made by one Willyam, then Abbotte theare of Whit-land, which lease was for ffowerscore and nyne yeares att the yearely rente of tenne shillings, which rente is nowe payed by credible reporte unto the kings Majesties Receyvor of his Highnes Revenues within this Countye of Carmarthen. And allsoe the sayd Jurors doe presente that there is within the Forenry, five ffishinge weares which belonge to the sayd Lordshippe of Kydwelly, viz., wheareof one is called the weare of Sir John Doune, knight, scituat uppon the River of Towy called by the name of Kored Jany, late in the tenure of Richard Cotten, Esquire, et valet per annum vis. viiid. now decayed and noe rente nowe payd for the same. The second is called Kored yr Abbot afforesayd, which lyeth uppon the River of Towye toward the Sea ... in the Tenure of Ffrauncis Maunsell Esquior, et valet per annum vs. The fourth Weare is called Korred Vache scituat uppon the sayd river nowe in the tenure of the sayd Ffrauncis Maunsell et valet per annum vs. and is nowe in decay, by what righte he enioyeth the same the Jurors cannot declare. The fifte weare is called Kored Shilly, late in the Tenure of Harry Vaughan, gent, at a certaine yearely rente which they doe not knowe beinge nowe all decayed.

To the ix^th and x^th Artickles the Jurors can saye noe ffurthir then they have sayed to the Eighte.

To the xi^th Artickle they saye that theare is within the fforrenry a mountayne called Althkanatha lyinge within the parishe of Kydwelly which is the kings Majesties soyle wherein the ffreehoulders of the sayd fforrenry have tyme out of mynde bine accustomed to have free and common of pasture for all manner of cattells which they doe take to belonge and appertaine to theare severall ffreehoulds lyinge within the sayd fforrenry as appurtnant thereunto without payinge of particular or severall rente or other dutyes for the same within the memory of man by credible reporte of all men there borderinge. Ffurther the sayd Jurors doe presente that one Edward Dounlee, Esquior, nowe deceased, and Harry Vaughan, gent, have within the space of twentye and foure yeares laste paste enclosed twoe closes of the sayd Lands to the quantitye of seaven acres or theare abowts beinge parte and parcell of the sayd mountayne called Althkanatha and converted the same to there owne use beinge of the yearely valwe of [ ]. And further the sayd Jurors doe presente that theare is a plotte of grownd called Morva bache contayninge by estymacion fowre acres or theare abowts lyinge in the parishe of Sainte Ismells which is and hath bine tyme out of mynde used by the neighbours and ffreehoulders theare adioyninge as Common of pasture for all mannor of cattell for the which they doe yearely paye att Michelmas the rente of sixe shillings eight pence. Alsoe the sayd Jurors doe presente that parte of a Moore called Combeheade contayninge by estymacion twoe acres or theare abowte lyinge within the parishe of Kydwelly within the sayd fforrenry a longe little Brooke theare leadinge towards Modlescombe is allsoe a Comon appurtenant and belonginge to the ffreehoulders of the sayd fforrenry. Alsoe the Jurors doe presente that the Marshe on both sydes the bridge called Pont y Spowder, beinge bounded from a gutter or Pyle called y Salthowse on the south parte thereofe and a foorde called Willyam Davids foord on the weste parte thereof and soe north eastward to a place called Ryde odin, and from thence northward to a place called Ryde y berth and Nant tyle and from thence to a place called Nant y Cause hath bene used tyme out of mynd as Comon of pasture apperteyninge to the ffreehoulders of the sayd fforrenry, without payinge anye rente or other dutyes to his Majestie for the same.

To the xii^th, xiii^ten, and xiiii^ten, the sayd Jurors have nothing to present to there knowledge then that they have sayed in the Eighte and Seventh.

To the xvth the sayd Jurors saye that all fynes, issues, amerciaments, perquisittes of courts and other casualtyes whatsoever whiche doe yearely accrwe to his Majestie within the sayd fforrenry hath bene collected by Sir Henry Jones, knight, and his auncestors or his or theare assigne or assignes communibus annis, And for the yearely valwe thereof the Jurors refer themselves to the records of the Courte for wante of other proofe to justifye, but by reporre of one Rowland Pretherch, gentleman, deputye Collector thereof under Sir Thomas Jones, knight, father to the foresayd Sir Henry Jones, knight, the ffynes and perquisitts of courts within the whole Commote of Kydwelly as well of the Welshrey as Inglishery, beinge both joyned together did amounte to the some of Seven Pownds yearly or theare abowts.

To the xvi^th Artickle they saye that they cannot make any perfecte boundaryes of the sayd fforrenry in respecte that diverse lands of the Welshry are intermyngled amonge the lands of the fforrenry. Yet neverless the sayd Jurors saye that the uttermoste boundes of the fforrenry beginneth at the River of Towy on the south and weste partes theareof and abbutteth on the north parte uppon or neare to the meassuage or tenement late of John Llewellin Ychan, nowe in the tenure of one Jeuan David and the Churche Lands of Llandevaylog. And likewyse on the easte parte the same abutteth uppon or neare the tenement and lands of Harry Willim Penry, which sayd forrenry lyeth and extendeth it selfe into parte of these severall parishes, viz., St. Ismelles, Llandevayloge, Kydwelly and Penbrey. And the same is usually distinguished and called by the names of the fforrenry of Liandydyry, parcell of the parishes of Penbrey and Kydwelly and the iforrenry of St. Ismells, and Haukinge Churche, parcell of the sayd parishes of St. Issmells, Llandevaylog and Kydwellye, being called the Englishrey of the sayd Commotte of Kydwellye.

To the Seavententh, the sayd Jurors doe saye that the Castle of Kydwelly together with all the houses and edifices thereof be in decaye and have bine by the space of xxxii yeares laste paste and more, savinge only a certaine roome over the entry of the gate of the sayd Castle which was in parte covered with leade, but nowe the sayd leade hath byne taken awaye, being abowte the valwe of [ ] or theare abowts. And as for the decaye and spoyle that was made and donne before [ ] they presente and saye that it was donne by Edward Dounlee, Esquior, late deceased, and David Lloyd, to what valwe they doe not knowe.

To the xviii^th Artickle the sayd Jurors saye that they knowe of none that hath or have any Evydences, Courte Rolles, Rentalles, Bookes of Survaye or any other Escripts or wrightings touchinge his Majesties sayd Lordshippe of Kydwelly or fforrenrye of the same.

To the xix^th Artickle the sayd Jurors doe presente and saye that there is within the sayd fforrenry three Customary Griste Milles, viz., Cadoggs Mille, the Middle Mylle and the Mille comonly called Melen y Combe, two of which Milles, viz., Cadoggs Mille and Myddle Mylle are nowe in the tenure of Aubrey Bevans as ffarmor unto the kings Majestie as it is credibly reported, and payeth unto the kings Majestie for the same per annum, tenn pownds or theare abowts, and for the more certenty whereof the sayd Jurors referr themselves unto the records thereof remayninge in his Highnes Courte of Dutchye. And that the Myll called Melyn y Combe is in the possessyon of Ffrauncis Maunsell Esquior, as ffarmor thereof unto his Majestie, as they likewyse heare by credible reporte, and he payeth there fore yearely the some of twentye shillings rente for the same, and for the more certentye whereof the sayd Jurors referr themselves unto the records as before. And further the sayd Jurors saye that theare was an ould decayed fullinge mylle neare to the Castle of Kydwelly which is demysed by his Majestie unto one [ ] Baron, the which Barron is bounde to his Majestie for the erectinge of a nwe gryste myll in the place of the sayd fullinge myll, as the Jurors are enformed, and for accomplyshement thereof the sayd Barron hath sett over his estate unto Efrauncis Maunsell, Esquior, whoe hath caused the gryste myll aforesayd to be erected in the place of the ffullynge mylle aforesayd, and payeth therefore yearely of rente to his Majestie by the hands of the particular Receyvor of the Dutchye, the some of [ ]. And that all the sayd mylles nowe are in good and suffityent reparation, and soe maynetayned and keapte by the farmors thereof. And further the sayd Jurors doe saye that everye ffreehoulder within the sayd fforrenry are and oughte by antient custome of the sayd fforrenry to finde one man yearely in the monthe of Maye uppon lawfull warninge geven to them for the scowringe and clensinge. of the myll ponnde apperteyninge to Caddoggs Myll before named for the space of three houres in suche daye as shalbe appointed and in defaulte thereof to be severally amerced to a farthinge. And that the custome is and soe hath byne accounted duringe the memory of man to grynde theare corne in or at any of the kinges sayd mylls within the sayd fforrenry at the choice of the sayd ffreehoulders.

To the xx^th and laste Artickle the sayd Jurors doe presente and saye that they heare by credyble reporte that the kings Majestie is Patron of the parsonage and Vickarydge of Sainte Ismells lyinge within the sayd fforrenry, which said parsonage is appropryated and nowe in the tenure of one Oliver Godfrey, farmor thereof, and that the same is of the yearely valwe of ffortye pownds or theare abowtes, but by what righte or whether the same be parcell or belonginge to the sayd Lordship of Kydwelly, the sayd Jurors cannot declare. And further the sayd Jurors doe presente and saye that Sir David Jenkines, Clerke, is nowe Incombent of the sayd Vicaridge by virtue of a presentacion under the Greate Seale of England from the late Queenes Majestie as the sayd Sir David Jenkins, clerke, crediblye affirmeth, which is of the yearely valwe of Twentye Pownds or theare abowts. Moreover, the sayd Jurors doe presente and saye that the whole Some of the Kings Majesties rente due uppon the ffreehoulders of the fforrenry doth amounte to the Some of ffowre pownds, tenn shillings, three pence per annum to theare beste knoweledge togeather with castri.
